Wade Tucker was born on September 23rd 1959 to Flora and Scott Tucker. He was the first of four boys: Wade, Brad, Eric and Toby. Wade began playing pee-wee football in the Bel Air 6-man football league in 1969. His father was his first coach. Wade went to Bel Air High School from 1973 to 1977 and besides being a top student was both an outstanding baseball and football player. In baseball he was a catcher and in his senior year, 1977, he made the All County Team. Cal Ripken Jr. was also a member of the same All County Team.
In football, Wade played tight end on offense and linebacker on defense. In his senior year he made both the All County and All Metro Football Teams and received a football scholarship to James Madison University. Wade’s first year at James Madison was also quite successful. He played tight end and started in all 8 JV games. He also played on the varsity special team and started on the varsity offense when they used two tight ends. Wade returned home for the summer and on June 9th 1978 he was killed in an automobile accident thus ending a promising career.
In the fall of 1979 the Bel Air Recreation Committee’s new Football Field was dedicated to Wade.
